DANCE
Alma Flamenco
Compañia Flamenco José Porcel presents a graceful and flashy evening of flamenco dance at the Northrop Auditorium tonight! See this rarely performed program
which incudes a wide range of flamenco
styles and selections featuring a "taranto (a sensual
duet of intertwinement) and a rondena (a colorful women's section of
light, harmony and rhythm), to the farruca and solea, joyous group
works of choreographic complexity." You'll also be treated to José
Porcel himself performing two enrapturing solo dances, the seguirilla
and an improvised alegrias, where he proves his fancy footwork is as
dramatically engaging as his personal stage presence. Stick around
after the show for a meet and greet with the performers and a chance to
pick the brain of the Northrop's new director, Ben Johnson.
7:30pm, Northrop Auditorium, 84 Church Street SE, Dinkytown, $31-$55
ART
The Sixth Minnesota National Print Biennial
North America, Aesthetic Apparatus, Squad 19 and many more making their
mark (or ink splatters) in galleries, on album covers and on rock show
posters far and wide. However, the carefully curated Sixth Minnesota National Print Biennial,
opening today at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery investigates the fringe
of the print world, inviting artists that use a variety of techniques
from traditional etching to abstract works, portraits, photographic,
3-D, and even a Xerox installation. Ninety works from 56 artists have been
selected for this exhibition, so you'll have no shortage of eye candy
to hold your attention. Tonight is a good time to check out the show
quietly, but if you'd prefer a more social environment you can always
wait for the opening reception this coming Friday from 6pm-8:30pm. Runs
through November 6th.
Nobody's Fool was made into a film starring the dreamy Paul Newman. His latest book, Bridge of Sighs,
is a blue-collar, small-town account that takes place in the Northeast.
The characters populating this small town are where the true story
lies. Russo states, "Bridge of Sighs is a book about somebody
who stays and somebody who leaves." Hear him elaborate on the choices
his characters make, which may just resonate with your life's ups and
downs, too. -Jill Yablonski
