The Mystery of Musashi

Japan.jpeg

It started with Don Lee, my colleague in the English department at Macalester. Don is new to the Twin Cities, author of the novel Country of Origin, and we're very pleased to have him. So when he told me he was mostly happy with Minnesota but disappointed in the small number of restaurants serving authentic Japanese cuisine, I was concerned.

I sent him to Obento-ya, Sakura, and Anemoni, where the head sushi chef, Kenji Sakomoto, is from Japan. Then I promised to check into Musashi, the new place that was supposed to open downtown, in the old Olive Garden spot on Hennepin Avenue, in summer. This was mid-September.

Not two days later, I got a phone call from a reader asking when Musashi was due to open; he drove by it every morning, he said, and though the signs were in place, it looked like construction had stopped.

I called both the Downtown Chamber and the Greater Minneapolis Convention and Visitors Bureau (now, unfortunately, called Meet Minneapolis); representatives from both responded that they, too, were perplexed. The family-owned Japanese restaurant had been busy with pre-opening activity until suddenly, one day, everyone just disappeared. The man from the GMCVA even offered to walk by on his lunch hour.

"I looked in the windows," he reported back. "It's dusty and there's construction equipment all over. That place can't be opening any time soon."

Finally, on the advice of my co-blogger, Jeremy Iggers, I looked up the restaurant's liquor license and got a telephone number from it. I called and a man answered. "Oh, we're opening in November now," he said. "Plans were delayed." I asked what sorts of items Musashi will serve and the man offered to send me a menu. . . .even asked for my e-mail address and seemed to be writing it down. But no menu ever materialized.

I'm hoping, for Don's sake -- and for the sake of retaining great literary talent in Minnesota -- that Musashi opens next month and serves delicious, authentic Japanese fare. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Don't forget to mention Tanpopo to your friend.

I heard from the head Sushi Chef JR at Tiger Sushi that his brother Henry formerly of Zushiya in Maple Grove will be working there. Since he left, Zushiya has taken a plunge and is not nearly as good. I am thrilled to have finally tracked down Henry down (I hope)and cannot wait to try this place out if he is the chef there. JR makes awesome sushi but I am a Henry Devotee.
Still dusty and half built! Checked today. There was a flurry of activity a few weeks back but the construction seems to have stopped once again.
Musashi looks open now...just walked past it last night everyone was ready...just waiting on customers!
Anyone got a phone number for this place? Talk about hard to find out info! Their marketing sucks - hope their food is better!

I just applied there, they got a new manager and it might take a while before things start running smoothly.
Our Musashi experience was absolutely awful. Our party of 6 arrived at 7:20 pm for a 7:30 reservation at one of their Hibachi tables. After being seated, were not even greeted to ask us for our drink order until 7:44... understandable if the place was even remotely busy, however, on a beautiful Saturday night when every other restaurant in the city was overbooked until 10 pm, we could have walked in and sat at any table in the restaurant with a group of literally any size. Once the waitress finally came to our table, she asked us for our drink order without even presenting us with their wine/beer list, and instead offered us her abbreviated and very incomplete rendition of what was on the list. After she came back a second time to ask us to repeat our drink order, someone in our party asked when our Hibachi chef would be joining us to make our dinner "in about 20-25 minutes." she responded -- we declined. On our way out the door, the restaurant host offered to seat us at any other "regular" table because he suggested that the service "might be better." We decided to pass. This restaurant has been open for some time now, and is in a prime location on 5th and Hennepin in DT Mpls. Once we walked in at 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening and saw how absolutely dead the restaurant was, we should have known what was coming. You would expect much more from a restaurant that charges 25-35 per entree. STAY AWAY... though I doubt they'll be open long enough for most people to get burned the way we did.
I went there with my wife a few weeks back and things were pretty great. We did not sit in the Hibachi room, but in the main dining area. The manager stopped by a twice during the meal to check up on us. It was a Thursday night, but the bar was still lingering with people from happy hour and the dining room has 8-10 tables full, but since the restaurant is huge it felt kinda empty. It seems their marketing has gotten a bit better since a quick search on the internet turns up their website http://mushashimn.com . My wife and I love sushi and this is probably one of the best places to go if you're looking for a good price, though we still love Martini Blue
