This will not be a comprehensive or otherwise definitive take on the current state of the Timberwolves. I'd like to think that anyone who read the 60 or so Three-Pointers I put out this year has a pretty good glimpse into what I think are the strengths and weaknesses of the team. And what should be done about it is out of my hands.
Trades? I can dream stuff up all day: So what?
Fire McHale? I assumed it would happen more than a year ago, and today's announcement indicates that he's still on board. Why wasn't McHale fired was one of the first questions I asked owner Glen Taylor when we spoke *last October*. Since then, the franchise has canned its coach for a 20-20 record, seen his replacement go 12-30 and express a desire to bring him back, and *deliberately lost* basketball games for the better part of two weeks, if not longer. Maybe sometime after the May 22 draft lottery or after the summer draft pick I can begin to tolerate serious thought about this franchise again. But right now, quite frankly, there are better things to do in life and I suggest we all start doing them. If you want to add your comments to this thread, I may respond, but I must tell you that right now I am more interested in looking at the NBA playoffs, or starting to talk about the Twins and baseball, or even get into a little hockey if the Wild win again tonight.
In other words, that is not a good day for sober analysis. On the other hand, it seems like the right time to get a few things off my chest.
* Mark Blount should be ashamed of himself. His "effort" over the final three months of the season was provocatively half-assed, making Michael Olowokandi look like a poster boy of professionalism by comparison. At least two or three times a game, and sometimes up to half a dozen, a smaller player would drive the lane where Blount was situated and score the layup with impunity, without worrying about a hard foul, block, or any consequence to him or his team. These things get around the league--you don't need scouts on the sideline to have the word spread that someone is chickenshit beneath the hoop--and had a lot to do with the Wolves collapse on the defensive end during the second half of the season.
* Ricky Davis and Blount care far more about making snide, snarky comments and feeling put-upon in a dual pity party than they do about improving themselves or this basketball team. Davis is a talented player who doesn't give a rat's ass about the greater good of team, and he's so pathological about it that I really don't think he can change. Justin Reed occasionally joined this cancerous little clique, making the Boston trade an outright disaster even if Wally Szczerbiak never plays another minute. Davis needs to go. Blount is probably untradeable, but if I were the Wolves, I'd bring a very nasty banger into training camp next year and force-feed Blount to him. It would do wonders for team chemistry.
* Today, about the only thing Kevin McHale could say in support of Randy Wittman was that he was a taskmaster who runs a tight locker room and would demand discipline and responsiveness from his team. McHale has spread a lot of bullshit in his time at the Target Center, but this may top the list. The idea of Wittman commanding respect from his troops is evidenced by....what? Who got called out most blatantly during Wittman's 4 months on the job? Not Davis, who got more minutes under Witt than he did under Dwane Casey. Not Blount, who played far far more minutes than he deserved from the All-Star break on, when rookie Craig Smith and energy guy Mark Madsen were blatantly better options. McHale also said today that in the current NBA, a guy like Smith can play the 4, that the game is gravitating to smaller and quicker front lines. He also stated that this team will get bigger and bang more, but more likely at the forwards than at the center position because of a lack of options. Well then, why didn't Wittman sit Blount down and start grooming Smith for that role? Yeah, he eventually did it, about three weeks after the most casual fan could see it had to be done. Bottom line, Wittman continued giving Blount and Davis heavy minutes, even as complained about selfish play and a lack of chemistry, and affirmed that he would make players pay for lack of effort. Then McHale comes along and says Wittman will be back because he is a taskmaster who will get the players' attention. How stupid do these people think we are? Meanwhile, the two players Witt really slighted were Trenton Hassell, who got benched for a perceived lack of hustle longer than anyone on the team--nearly two straight games--and then only grudgingly was allowed back in the lineup; and Kevin Garnett, who heard his coach say there wasn't enough locker room policing going on--a direct rip on KG, the de facto leader of the team. Maybe McHale and Wittman see a different game than I do, but Trenton Hassell and Kevin Garnett are not among my top 6 things wrong with this wretched franchise. In fact the VP of Personnel and the Coach rate much higher on my "could be upgraded" list than the team's two best on-ball defenders.
* Big Disappointment # 3, behind the listless, soft, quit-on-his team Blount and the narcissistic, unreliable, doesn't-understand-what-it- takes-to-win Davis, is Mike James, who proved rather decisively that he can't handle the pressure of being a key component of a quality team. Once the onus of meaningful games was lifted, James became similar to the player he was in Toronto--capable of scoring in bunches, and bringing energy to the offensive end (he defense remained awful). Last year it was Marko Jaric who demonstrated that he is not to be trusted when the game is on the line, but at least Jaric restricted his chokes to crunchtime. James cannot be trusted as long as his team means to contend and he is more than a bit role player in the proceedings.
* There is not a single player on this team that had a really good year. Not one. Garnett is showing signs of slippage, especially on defense, where he can't scramble and recover or casually outjump and snatch rebounds or deter penetration the way he did in his prime. Davis is the team's most fraudulant stat-stuffer since Micheal Williams. Randy Foye was inconsistent to a fault, even for a rookie looking an important, unfamiliar position. (McHale said today that he envisions Foye playing "off the ball" more in the backcourt next year.) Hassell and Jaric provided offense the way November or March occasionally provide a warm sunny day. Mark Blount provided a first 45 games of hustle and quality shooting that made his last 35 or so games all that much more abominable by comparison. James is a flunky, a sidekick, pure and simple. And so on, down the list.
There. End of rant. Time to start remembering why I enjoy basketball so much--I'll do some thumbnail playoff series impressions and picks in the next post.

I disagree pretty sharply with college wolf about how the draft should go. Because of the "new NBA", SG and SF merge a bit together, I think our draft order should be
1) Oden - Obvious
2) Durant - Obvious
3) Brandon Wright
4) Hibbert
5) Horford
6) Noah
We can't, can't, can't take a swing man. Not with our roster. Bummer we pick 7th with only six on the list of bigs. We're just fortunate that someone should pick one of the SFs, before it gets to us. I even heard Seattle likes Yi.
I agree with Jesse (and everyone else) about how difficult it is to listen to McHale. I guess it's been hard for him to watch the games. Well that's great. He could feel our pain except that he gets a salary to watch that crap, while we continue to pay for it. To think that part of our ticket price goes to his salary.
Kudos to Britt for the fine treys. And to the great posters. Always enlightening, frequently amusing, sometimes maddening, which is how it should be.
Looks like the "roaches" from Portland have already aced us out a spot in the lottery, grabbing the 6 spot. Season ticket sales are down too. Must be the penalty for "overt tanking."
As bad as it is right now, out in Seattle it's worse. The new owner is threatening to move the team after next season because of issues over a new arena. The Sonics may become the Okies.
Finally, I'd love to see Detroit win it. I also wouldn't mind Phoenix proving that their style can win it all. Win or lose, they're just fun to watch. And even though they don't have much of a chance, I think Utah is a nice story, coming back from recent down times. Proof that good coaching and team leadership is important.
See y'all at the ping-pong table.
LOL @ Jason Terry and Tony Parker being True Point Guards LOL LOL NOT
I agree with you College Wolf. But I don't just see it being possible. Let's talk about some of these players.
First, T-Hud. He has at least 2 more years on his contract. He's making 6 mill a year. He has had injury issues and he didn't do much this season to help his value or non value. I see your idea though. Get him out of here because he can't play defense and is a streaky shooter at best. At least we'd free up a roster space for someone else. Well, a buy out doesn't mean his money is NOT on the payroll still, because it is. I'm just saying it wouldn't make any cap issues go away. If you keep T-Hud on you get an expiring contract the year after and a worthless T-Hud becomes a worth something more. I don't thikn the "Stress of both worlds" minds being burried on the bench. And as long as he's there I don't mind too much either.
Ok, Jaric. He was not good his first year with us. But this year he did play a lot better. More confidence, better defense, and worked well int he back court with Randy Foye. He has 4 years left on his contract. And we still owe a 1st rounder for him. He's not the first guard I would try to move. In fact he'd be the last because of his versatility and personality. He also has relatively injury free since his time in MN and that was one of the questions about him coming to the Wolves. He is any of the 3 have the best chance of gaining "Playing" value down the line as opposed to just expiring contract value.
Mike James is a bust. This team is a BAD. Not enough ball to go around. Not enough defense being played. And he's a part of it all. I beleive he is with us for 4 more years and if he gets traded he gets paid for 1 more. Someone can clarify that trade kicker if they would like to. If that's true about the trade rumors with him then I would do it in a heart beat. I would take any big (well almost any) instead of him.
I mean how do you get rid of these guys??!?!?! You can't....no one wants them. No one wants their contracts. The only way these guys are going is if it's part of a KG deal and it's like the poison pill they have to take or they are gonna become expiring contract fodder.
Instead of using the Chris Webber clause on Fred Hiberg they should have used it on Troy Hudson. GG Wolves Brain trust you dumb asses. Fred had 1 or 2 years at like 2.4 mil or something...T Hud was for at the time 4 more years about 5-6 mil. Oh Snap!
To think we still owe 2 more first round picks. To think that no one wants these guys. The Wolves hands are tied. They can't package anymore picks with guys to get different guys like they always do, So I'm not sure if the WOlves can move anyone.
Thank you for all the 3 pointers Britt Robson. Your work doesn't go unappreciated here. I too do not understand why Glen Taylor was so quick to make it final that McHale would be back. McHale said "I didn't want to leave the team in this mess". Hey buddy! You made this mess! And the best thing to do is just to get out. Foye play off the ball more, geeee, that's a novel idea! Wow, so you're going to play him to his strengths? Ingenious! What really bugged me that McHale said was "Some of these games were really hard for me to watch". Talk about adding insult to injury...is he trying to patronize us? Besides that's the same thing he said last year.
My first big question is this: What happens if the Wolves stumble next year? When they are 8 games sub .500 and are on a 4 game losing streak before the All star break? Who gets fired then? McHale or Whittman? My money is on Whittman. Who gets traded then? Ricky or KG or ..... BOTH? I can see it going down like such.
My second concern is the draft. Say what you want about the Wolves doing decent in the last few years with the draft. But my friends... never, never, never underestimate the stupidity of Kevin McHale. And don't expect them to do anything novel or crafty this draft. Things like buying first rounders and trading up etc. etc. are foriegn thoughts that only come during short lucid moments of our brain trust. Now that we're in the draft, we have to hope, we move up. 2ndly there, we MUST do well with this selection becuase next year, as it stands we will be giving that pick to the clips.
The bright future lies ahead with this impervious blueprint for the future. I don't think the Wolves have hit rock bottom yet, but this up coming season has all the makings of an apocalypse, a cataclysmic, calamity of destruction. KG traded? Talent traded? Front office fired mid season? A draft bust? Serious injury? I'm goin with Murphy's law on this one seeing that dumb and dumber are back again...
Thanks again Britt for all the 3 pointers and the medium to express ourselves. Thanks to all the posters for your insight and strength to stay with the season.
Playoffs?! Playoffs?! I want Houston to go deep.I'm a big Alston fan and a big Yao fan. T- Mac is fun to watch when he's on also. I would also like to see the Magic do something. Although I don't really like J. Nelson, I do like Grant Hill and D Howard. Howard looks like he has a lot of fun out there on the court and that's always a good thing to see. Yeah, Detroit because of Flip also Chris Webber. So as you can see I'm a bit conflicted about that series but..I will be rooting for the Magic.
I'll try not to ramble too much or be overly negative, since people don't tend to like my pessimistic (yet realistic) thoughts.
Here's what we should try to accomplish:
- Move T-Dud, Ricky, Blount, James, Jaric. The more that we can get rid of the merrier. I don't care if we get anywhere near similar talent as long as we take back good character guys with contracts that are more favorable than we are sending off. That's not too much to ask, is it?
- Is Maggette still available? While I know that his character may not be perceived as the best, I really think it is just because of his current situation with Dunleavy (who didn't realize he was the second best player on the team until the very end of the season.) He would fill a gaping hole at SF. I'd argue that he is currently one of the top 5 guys in the league at slashing and getting to the line for free throws or easy baskets. Would Ricky + McCants get it done? I'd do it in a heartbeat. If we get Maggette, draft a C (Hibbert or Yi) in the draft.
- We need a big man. Correction, a big man that plays defense and can rebound (Sorry Blount.) There are rumors going around about Mike James for Nazr M. or Adonyl Foyle. Their contracts aren't great but at least they fill a need. There isn't much else better we could acquire right now. I'd prefer we take Hibbert in the draft to fill this need if we don't get a top 3 lottery pick.
- Acquire a "True" PG. Foye is not one. If Conley or Acie Law slips in the draft, buy or trade for one of Phoenixs THREE first round picks if one of these two are available. Move Foye to SG. Or try to trade for a Luke Ridnour, Brevin Knight type player.
- DON'T use the MLE, unless its a slam dunk guy. Too bad there are very few I see for this offseason.
- Pray for a lottery pick. Here's how my board would look:
1) Oden - Obvious
2) Durant - Obvious
3) Wright's (tie) - Based on potential alone.
5) Brewer/Hibbert - Both fill glaring holes. (SF/C)
7) Conley/Law - A true PG.
9) Whoever's left among: Thad Young, Yi, Horford, Noah, Jeff Green - in that order.
- Fire Mchale. Get someone outside the organization.
- Fire Wittman. See above.
- If we can't trade T-Dud, then buy him out.
Well, that's my take without spewing negativity (and assuming KG isn't traded... otherwise I could list a plethora of scenarios.)
As for a response to Lisa:
TOR > NJ
CHI > MIAMI
PISTONS > MAGIC
CLEV > WASH
DAL > GS
PHO > LAL
SA > DEN
HOUSTON > UTAH
DAL VS SA.
DET VS CHI
DAL VS DET
Dallas for the Title.
Thanks Britt for all your hard work on these treys.
I just want to compliment Mr. Robson and the other contributors to this blog. As a frustrated Twolves fan, it is nice to find a place with well-written, original, informative, and take-no-prisoners commentary. We all must have masochistic tendencies though if we still give this team so much of our thought and time. But loyalty is an honorable trait.
On to my point: I think you make a very good point in comparing the young talent then to the young talent now. This young group has some nice things going for them, but they don't have anyone resembling a young KG. Foye, McCants, and the Cookie Monster are nice players, play the right way, and have bright futures. While I believe they can be integral parts of a championship caliber team, I don't see any of the 3 becoming that "franchise-type" player.
On the other hand, I do believe that Foye is more of a winner than Marbury. He might not have Marbury's pure talent, but Foye seems like the kind of guy who will do what it takes to win while Marbury was only interested in winning if he was the hero.
Amen. On a side note, it's worth saying on this final post, Mr. Robson, that you're a great, great writer. Your style, your diction, your metaphors....I enjoy these touches as much (if not more) than your insightfulness on the Wolves, their chemistry, the players and the team history. Unlike the Wolves franchise itself, with your blog we can always expect a product of the highest quality and consistency. I look forward to your next season. Until then....
And Victor, I'd hardly call Tony Parker and Jason Terry "true" point guards, but your point is well taken (no pun intended).
A hope for the Playoffs....to see the Nets win a round so the world can be reminded of Jason Kidd's brilliance. This guy is so amazing, and is still one of the best 10 players in the league in my opinion. I'd go so far as to say he's as great as Nash, if you give equal weight to defense as offense -- 9 assists and 8 rebounds per game, and 12 triple doubles!?!??
Happy Playoffs
Responding to Lisa's challenge, I'm rooting for the Pistons to win it all. Mostly because I'd love to see Flip get a ring, but also just because I like the way their team is constructed and how they play. I don't see any team in the East beating them this year and I figure that the West will be a lot tougher to get through, so whoever does make it to the Finals will likely not be as fresh.
I'm torn between Dallas and Phoenix as to who will make it, though I'm rooting for Phoenix just because I think I'd enjoy a Phoenix-Detroit Finals more than Dallas-Detroit. I agree with midlife that I'd hate to see the Spurs in the Finals again, but I doubt the Nuggets can knock them out, notwithstanding the fact that I hate them, too.
Great stuff as always from you folks. Thanks for not letting my dolor get in the way of clear thinking responses.
And Lisa, what a great idea, feedback on why some teams are likeable and should be backed. Here are a few you can choose from:
Detroit, because they have Flip and Chauncey and Chris Webber, three really good guys, each with something to prove: Flip and C-Webb that they can "win the big ones" with a passing, jump-shooting offense and half-a-leg, respectively; and Chauncey that he deserves an enormous new contract.
Phoenix, because this incredibly fun up-and-down jack-it-up style they play won't really make an impact on the league until they win a trophy; that and the fact that Steve Nash will be robbed of an MVP award this year and deserves compensation.
Dallas, because Mark Cuban is an owner who cares about his players and his fans and did what any of us would have done when a billion landed in his lap--buy an NBA team and then travel with it, blog about it, bitch about the refs, tweak the knights of the rulebook, etc. That and Avery Johnson is a smart, smart coach. He didn't figure in my top three picks at season's end ("The Great Brittons") but when mulling over whether Golden State could pull the upset, I realized that the main reason it won't happen is because Johnson won't let it. Now that's a coach.
Washington, because they are the ultimate underdog, the team most likely to get bounced in four straight.
Anybody else have any favorites?
BTW, I'll post some playoff picks and thumbnail analysis (aside from Utah-Houston, which I did the other day) later today and tomorrow.
I love the above comment about how the young talent does not resemble the previous young talent. I agree completely. I like our young talent, but I can't see them as being building blocks for a franchise. I think Smith will end up being a valuable back up, and McCants and Foye, at their peak, could be maybe a good third option.
Thanks for the treys, Britt. They brightened up a morose season.
I'm not as horrified by Blount being on the team as I possibly should be. I think it's good to have a spot up shooting big to draw their big away from the hoop. However, that has more situational value than anything else, and his logging heavy minutes has guaranteed losses the same way James has. So much for the best wolves center ever.
If Foye plays off the ball, maybe we'll draft Conley. He's a real PG, with mad skills, but that would leave little hope for the front line. If McHale is comparing us to the successful "small ball" teams, maybe we should review their players and coaches. If we take that route I'll need to score whatever worked on Lisa.
Whoever wins the playoffs, I kind of hope it's not the spurs. Duncan is great, of course, but I need them for my KG arguments. As much talent as the Spurs have, Duncan apparently needs a Hall of Fame center as well. If a zillion 50 win seasons don't matter for KG, then I'm sticking with Duncan being Robinson's sidekick. A really tall Pippen.
go twins
go pistons
Ricky Davis is as good as gone and is tradeable, which leaves us with four players that are extremely difficult to move. Blount will stay because he's untradeable. Hudson is the same, but should be bought out. James can be traded, but only for another unwanted player. Jaric is likely stuck here. If we can come back next year with just Blount and Jaric and not the other three, it's a successful off-season.
As for KG, I'd enjoy watching him play into his retirement, even if that means a steep decline.
There is a positive to this season and it's that we finally have three young, talented players. Still, we should be cautioned. It's been so long since we've had young talent that we don't even know what it looks like. Yet neither of these three (McCants, Foye or Smith) remind anyone of the hope inspired by the last young talent we had here over ten years ago -- Garnett and Marbury.
I disagree with everyone who discounts the help of the draft. We need this pick and need it real bad. We need to luck into a Garnett, a Wade, or Nash. Wherever we pick, we need a hall of fame player. Seriously, a good player like Foye is not good enought, we have to get a franchise player.
I think McHale managed to say almost entirely all the wrong things at his press ocnference, starting with he and Wittman both returning.
They need more size up front, but not at center! WTF does that mean? Are you planning on replacing KG?
Off course you need post defense, so why the hell was Blount playing at all in the second half? In order to lose games? Smith and Madsen can both play post defense and so should have played all those minutes. Plus, this was known the day Eddie Griffin crashed his car - make a damn trade during the season.
Foye should play off the ball - great, so now we have 7 off-guards and no point. Who the hell is going to play the point? Not the swindler James again. So McHale is admitting he used his last two first round picks on undersized off-guards AND traded for Davis and Jaric AND drafted Bracey Wright, all the while having Hassell on the roster. IDIOT - All off-guards, no point guards, no small forwards.
Here's what is needed, IMHO:
1. For god's sake find a real point guard, preferably a veteran - Steve Blake or Brevin Knight or even Mike Bibby, if somehow possible. Stop this fetish with combo guards that McHale has. Good teams have true point guards, Kevin (see Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio).
2. Trade Blount + Hassell/Jaric/James/whoever for someone else's albatross contract - Steve Francis/Raef LaFrentz/Darius Miles, whoever + a minor piece (defensive big man / real small forward). Addition by subtraction of Blount and one of the off-guards who can't shoot.
3. Keep Davis for the time being (with an expiring deal he will be valuable at the trade deadline for both a contending team and a losing team) BUT send him to the bench - he is not a leader on the team. Maybe sixth man, but that's it. Cut his role and he loses influence in the locker room. Marginalize him, make it clear he is likely to be traded. Plus, he's in a contract year, he might play well.
4. Pray that KG entirely missed McHale's press conference and so does not demand to be traded because McHale is likely to do all the wrong things, or nothing.
Sadly, I expect #4 will be in vain. If KG is paying attention to what McHale is saying, he is going to ask to be traded, because how can he have any faith anymore that McHale can make any of the right moves to get the T-Wolves going in the right direction.
In fact, we know from KG's own statements that he sees McHale as the problem and has essentially demanded front office changes for more competent leadership.
The team is in exactly the same position as it was this time last year. McHale failed completely to improve this team at all. Is there any reason for any of us, but more importatnly KG, to believe that things will be improved for next year?
Britt,
Just wanted to say thanks for your dedication to the trey. My Wolves reading on the computer has been very limited since the end of January (due to back surgery.) In the limited time I was able to sit and read, I always went to your blog first because you, at least, tell it like it is. I also appreciated the input from many of your posters who are more basketball savvy than myself. Thank you all.
While this has been an extremely disappointing season, the optimist in me would like to end the season focusing on the very few "upsides" - those mainly being Garnett, Smith and Foye. Smith, in particular, had to be the most pleasant surpise in a season so full of duds and disappointments.
I spent almost all of February in a narcotic haze (due to painkillers) and found that the Wolves were alot easier to watch while under that influence. March and April made me wish I still had a supply to rely on for game day!! My summer wish list is for Blount and Davis to both find new homes and that they are replaced with players who have heart and a killer instinct on a day in and day out basis, or at least 90% of the time. (Hell, lately I would have settled for Blount to at least have a pulse. WTH happened to him during All-Star break? Did he find the Kandi man's Kool-Aid or something?)
Oh well, let the Wolves bball drought begin! I have some interest in the play-offs, but I am having difficulty this year picking one team to adopt as my play-offs fave. Last year I was rooting for the Heat, but that was mostly because my dad was a huge Shaq/Wade fan. Sadly, my dad passed away last June so he didn't even get to see the Heat win it all. I suppose I could root for the Heat in my dad's memory, but knowing my dad, he would be rooting for someone other than the Heat.
So, I would like to issue a challenge to some of you out there. Tell me who you pick to win each conference and why. Sell me on your team, since I need a new one (only for the play-offs of course.) And I should note here that don't even try to sell me the Nuggets. I have always had a huge dislike for them for some unkknown reason. (And them getting AI didn't help one single bit!!
