When I read Father Forgive Them, I actually had to put the paper down a couple of times, as I thought I would be ill. Now I would like to respond to Father Buffer’s questions.
He asked “If homosexuality is something we should all accept & if priests should be allowed to have sex, & if boy scouts should have gay scoutmasters, then why is everyone upset that homosexual priests have gotten sexually involved with boys under 18?” There is so much wrong with that question it’s hard to know where to start. To begin, priests have taken a vow of celebacy to God & the world. Just because a scoutmaster is gay, I don’t think we should assume he wants to have sex with the scouts. That kind of thinking is inane. And to try & justify having sex with a minor is deplorable. We’ve seen what happens when school teachers have sex with their students, they don’t get transferred to other districts, they get thrown in prison.
Doctors can have all the sex they want, whether it be hetro or gay, their (adult) patients can have all the sex they want, but a Dr can’t have sex with a patient, he/she will lose their medical license. Why? Because the Dr is in a position of power. College professors can’t sleep with their students even though all are adults, because they are in the position of authority, it would be unethical. Remember ethics, father? Didn’t the battery of psych tests you took become a priest mention those?
I don’t care if priests are gay or not, I really couldn’t care less, but does being gay justify seducing boys & young men? Ever hear of statitory rape? The father asked how the journalists would like it if he wrote about their sex lives, as if they were comparable! Somehow I doubt if either journalist has taken a vow of celebacy, or has been having sex with minors.
Father Buffer doesn’t seem to care that minor children were abused, but is obviously absolutely irate that the guilty have been caught.
